A question you may have when painting the exterior of your home is what is the difference between spraying the paint on versus back-rolling or brushing it? There are a couple of different ways in which you can apply the paint to the exterior of your home, you just need to know which kind of surface your painting and which method is best for that surface.
Some surfaces require that they be sprayed while some surfaces require that they are brushed and rolled, but surfaces like stucco, brick and stone need to be sprayed as well as back-rolled/brushed. The reason is that they have more porous surfaces with more texture, so it’s basically impossible to get into all of the crevices with just the sprayer alone. It requires brushing as well in order to get the whole surface completely painted.
Some surfaces that are more smooth, such as hardy plank, look a lot better when they are sprayed versus brushed and rolled. For example, here in Denver, Colorado, where Illusion of Kolors inc. is based, we face very sunny, dry weather almost all year round. While painting exteriors we face problems with the sun being so intense that it makes the paint dry as we put it on, sometimes leaving brush marks, so most exteriors are sprayed on rather than brushed on to avoid issues such as brush marks.
Textures like cement and fiber board look better sprayed but are harder to to spray than hardy plank. An issue you may run into when spraying these surfaces are “lap marks” which make the surface look really bad in certain lighting. Once you get that lap mark there isn’t any way to get rid of it so it’s important to spray the surface the correct way. Find a logical stop and start point, i.e: spray to the end of a window or door, you don’t want to start or stop right in the middle. Find a place where you can continuously spray all the way from beginning to end clearly.
It is very important to know how to paint the exterior of your home. If you don’t already know how, I recommend hiring an exterior house painter or going online to do some research. The exterior of your house is the first thing people are going to see when coming up to your front door to visit, it reflects who you are. So, you want to make sure that it looks the best!
